By the time Lindsay got to the end of the letter, she was still intact, but a little appalled. How nice to see a child happy with so little. Huh.

She referred to the training materials, then pulled out a piece of Elf stationery and read the letter again.

The main thing was not to think of how her daughter would be nearly old enough to write this letter by now. How her niece Jenny and Kelsey could have been close, the way Lindsay and her cousins were. She should think instead about how Troy had wanted a bike so badly at that same age, and how his Dad told him he had to wait until he was big enough for his older brother’s hand-me-down. Then “Santa” had come through with a bike that year anyway, so for weeks Troy wanted Santa for a father because his own was clearly too cheap.

The story made her smile. Much better than misery over what could never be.

Following Ingrid’s instructions to go big on warmth and spirit and ho-ho-ho and very light on actual promises, she carefully, and rather laboriously, answered the letter, read it over, and decided she’d done a decent job.

There.

She’d survived.

Feeling slightly foolish for underestimating her strength, she pulled the second letter over. This one was written by an older child.
